Download this cooperative barrier game to teach your students vocabulary and communication skills using the structure Match Mine. Each partner receives a game board with gifts and multiplication grid game pieces to place on the game board. Partners sit on opposite sides of a barrier so they can’t see each other’s game board or game pieces. Partner A arranges the multiplication grid pieces on each present of the game board. Then, using only verbal communication, Partner A describes to Partner B which multiplication grid goes on each gift so they can make a match. For example, “Put the grid representing four times six on the upper middle gift.” When they think they have a match, they compare arrangements and celebrate. This set teaches multiplication grid skills and vocabulary such as: column, times, product, etc. Match Mine is a fun and cooperative way to develop language, communication, cooperation, and perspective-taking skills.

Then, using only verbal communication, Partner A describes to Partner B which word goes where in the sentence so they can make a match. For example, “Put the word ‘the’ first to start the sentence.” When they think they have a match, they compare arrangements and celebrate. This set teaches making sentences using common vocabulary. Same-Different is a great game to develop analytic thinking skills and communication skills. Students can’t see each other’s pictures so they must scan their own picture carefully, ask questions, describe details, and take the role of the other. For example, “The elf in my picture is hanging a photo of Santa Claus on the wall. Is your elf also hanging a photo?” The game is easy to set up and play.
