Download this cooperative barrier game to teach your students vocabulary and communication skills using the structure Match Mine. Each partner receives an Astro Talk game board and shape game pieces to place on the game board. Partners sit on opposite sides of a barrier so they can’t see each other’s game board or game pieces. Partner A arranges the shape game pieces on the game board. Then, using only verbal communication, Partner A describes to Partner B which shape goes on each area of the game board so they can make a match. For example, “Put the circle in the top, left area of the game board, near the astronaut.” When they think they have a match, they compare arrangements and celebrate. This set teaches common shape vocabulary such as: hexagon, triangle, and oval, as well as directional vocabulary: below, above, next to, etc. Match Mine is a fun and cooperative way to develop language, communication, cooperation, and perspective-taking skills.

Same-Different is a great game to develop analytic thinking skills and communication skills. Students can’t see each other’s pictures so they must scan their own picture carefully, ask questions, describe details, and take the role of the other. For example, “The witch in my picture is wearing a black hat with a buckle on it. Is your witch wearing a hat?” The game is easy to set up and play.
