teamformation question

Post by kdavis99 » Wed Mar 05, 2014 3:23 pm

I teach elementary technology classes. I haven't been using the Kagan structures consistently just the occasional think-pair-share but I really want to get back to it I miss it. The problem is I'm not sure how I can form teams of kids with various levels as I don't know their reading levels, which would be my first choice for teamformation. I've also noticed though that there are some kiddos that receive services but they are very techno capable whereas I have some gifted kids that really struggle. Any suggestions? I could possibly create a technology assessment but as I teach K, 1, 2, 4, and 5 that will take time and the sooner I can get them into teams the happier I will be.

What a great question! Love that you are wanting to form teams in Technology. Although, you could use their classroom academic data, it may not necessarily reflect their technology level. My recommendation would be to create some kind of Technology Pre-test, and use their scores on that to help create teams. This will allow students who might be lower in the regular ed classroom- to be higher and a shining star in your classroom. hope that helps.

Wendy is right. Sometimes, easy is best. If you know the classroom teacher is using structures and he/she has them in teams, it is a pretty good idea to keep them in those heterogeneous teams. As a specialist that sees just about every class, it can sometimes be a daunting task to create the teams based on your curriculum. You would also benefit from the Teambuilding efforts that are already happening in the class.

Thanks for you question.

Thank you for the replies. Unfortunately there are only two teachers in my building that use Kagan structures and I only have some of their kids bc the others take strings. I have begun doing some classbuilding and using Round Robin. I'm also making notes during class as to ability levels in technology. I'll put them in teams when we come back from Spring Break and see how it goes.

First, KUDOS!!!!! I love how you are being a Trendsetter for the teachers in your school. And I think you are taking a very smart approach. After Spring Break is perfect. I would use this time, from now till the end of the year, to perfect your rubric/standards for teamformation criteria and get a few structures solid. So come first day, next year, you are ready to rock-n-roll! Best of luck!
