Post by jennp2222 »

I attended a workshop last week and wanted to buy LA, Math and Science for Little Ones but, they had none to look at . What types of activites are in these books? Would they be appropriate for special needs students?

Jenn,
There are two books I would recommend for sure. The new K-2 math book just came out. It is has a lot of activities you could use with your students. The Grade 1 balanced literacy book is out which has a ton of blacklines and easy to use activities to go with the structures. The kindergarten balanced literacy book will be out by the end of the summer. That is great too - lots of visuals. Regarding the science, the Wee Science is probably best. It is built around lessons instead of structures like the other books I recommended.

Hello there,

Here’s my short list of must-haves for a kindergarten classroom. There are so many but these books where not only on hand in my kindergarten classrooms, they were always on hand in my daughters’ bedrooms. The key for kindergarteners is to get them to love reading and books; or in a broader sense, to love learning and stories. And when you read to your little one, make sure that you use your finger to follow along as you read each word. Kindergarteners don’t know how to read and as you read while pointing to each read word, your child is connecting meaning-making and words. It's a super powerful concept as they develop those great reading and learning habits.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day - Judith Viorst & Ray Cruz

Amazing Grace - Mary Hoffman & Caroline Binch

Are You My Mother? - P.D. Eastman

The Big Red Barn - Margaret Wise Brown

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? - Bill Martin, Jr. & Eric Carle

Cat in the Hat, The - Dr. Seuss

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom - Bill Martin, Jr. (author), John Archambault (author), and Lois Ehlert

Thanks
