In the Brain Friendly workshop the topic of clearing working memory before beginning instruction was discussed. Unfortunately, I neglected to make any notes of suggestions for doing this....Thanks for any help.

I'm sure Dr. Kagan recommended using a structure to clear working memory. Structures such as Timed Pair Share and RoundRobin are good to let kids talk about what is on their mind. Then, they are "ready" for new content. In one of the workshops I attended, Dr. Kagan recommended having kids write down everything that was on their mind before the lesson to clear working memory. That may be what you were thinking of.
