On-line Engagement

With the recent world events and all ages doing classwork on-line, does Kagan offer any on-line structures? I know the principal of PIES requires engagement with others, but I'm wondering if Kagan can somehow be utilized for on-line learning (keeping in mind that there are restrictions to students being recorded).

This is also my question! I've been talking to our technology integration specialists and have been brainstorming. We are allowed to use Zoom, so we can do break-out rooms in groups of four (which will be super-helpful). I'd love to see what others are coming up with, especially with the focus on Kagan structures. Thank you!

Thank you for you for reaching out. Sorry for the delay in responding. With covid-19, we have been in a limited capacity since mid-March. As you know, these are unprecedented times. As a result, virtual teaching is here.

I myself am just learning about pros and cons of a virtual platform, so I do not consider myself an expert on it my any means.

I think we do have some options in teams. I completely agree with you that PIES must be intact. From what I understand is that in break out groups students can work in teams, but individual accountability will be more on the students. To be completely honest, I am still trying to wrap my head around Classbuilding virtually.

I would highly encourage you to check out @evan_markowitz on Twitter. He is the principal at Athenian Academy in Florida. I know his teachers are doing a phenomenal job using some structures in teams. I've seen some variations of RoundTable, Talking Chips, as well as Numbered Heads Together. I know Numbered Heads Together was one team with the teacher, which is how it would be in a small group in the classroom.

Hi- My school is conducting school wide Kagan methods in August, and we plan to begin the new academic year in person, but 6 feet apart. I wanted to learn about Kagan earlier so I could start planning during summer break, but I already see the challenge of using these fun and engaging strategies when students are 6 feet apart or via GoogleMeet/Zoom. I also teach middle school (Religion) and am wondering if there are chat rooms or support groups for Kagan users.

How did you all use Kagan structures online?
Which structures worked best in a Google Classroom setting?
Which structures do you find most effective with middle schoolers?
Are there any teacher forums to share ideas/experiences?

Hello Payton,

Thanks for your message and I'll try to help as best I can.

You mentioned your school is conducting school wide Kagan methods in August. Is it correct to assume that you / your school colleagues / your site administrators have all had some previous training? If so, then you may want to start discussions with your colleagues, over the summer, to see what their plans are for implementation. These individuals, especially your admin., will be your first line of contact for support and use of structures. I've seen teachers start with a 'Structure A Month'. All teachers in the grade level (or school) decide on which structure to use, they go practice it in their respective classrooms, and then they come together to share their experiences. I've found this is an incredible way to dialogue and learn of how structures are used in different content areas.

If you haven't had training, then you may want to seek out, via our website, online trainings to attend so you can get an idea of what structures are all about.

Social distancing in our physical classrooms will present challenges all the way around, for sure! Our "stop structures", such as RallyRobin, Timed Pair Share, Pair Share, RoundRobin (variations) will still be able to be used wile students talk to one another. The only difference is they'll be standing or seated further apart from one another. There will be some need for management of voice level, however, these structures would be usable. For novelty, these pair & team structures can also be used while students stand, while talking

Classbuilding structures (ex: Mix Pair Share, Stand Up -Hand Up - Pair Up), would still be usable, however, the adaptation would be no touching and walking as far apart as possible while they mix in the room.

In our live online courses, via Zoom, we put people into random teams and pairs when we want engagement. We either randomly select, or manually select who will be working together. If you use Zoom, you have that capability.

I'm not sure how this works in a Google classroom setting, as I'm not familiar with that format.

As far as which structures are most effective, please know that the structure you use, is based on the type of question you want to ask. In Dr. Kagan's Cooperative Learning textbook, on pages 6.24 an 6.25, it shows all of the structures and how they function. Once you've been able to identify the purpose (or function) of your question, then you can match a structure with it.

As far as teacher forums, this is a great place to start! I'd also ask your fellow colleagues or teacher friends to see which forums they use for support.
