Social Studies Higher-Level Thinking Questions
As a trainer of teachers, I am sometimes asked to visit classrooms and teach. I recently visited a middle school and was asked to do a lesson on current events. I chose Higher Level Thinking Questions, Social Studies as a resource for my lesson the next day.
Current events in my classroom used to be ME leading them in a discussion. I seemed to be the only one reading the newspaper or following what was happening in the news and I found it depressing and sad that I couldn't motivate students to become interested in what would someday be in history books. Well, things have changed dramatically since I started using the questions from this book.
We recently used the current event questions in this book to discuss the recent happenings with our people being held hostage in China. We then did some reading and sharing what we knew about the cultural, economic and physical geometry of China with other questions from the book and finally did writing about the incident and its implications.
I am changed forever in the ways I will teach current events. You should have SEEN and HEARD them! I walked around and listened as they talked about current events and I was so proud, I couldn't help but smile. These are MY students discussing current events with real interest! WOW!
